Fuel Cell, Systems and Technologies

1. Présentation

The PaxiTech Educational Fuel Cell is very simple and easy to use - just plug the hydrogen reservoir into the cell and let the fuel cell use the oxygen in the surrounding air to produce electricity.

Using a voltmeter and potentiostat ( or a variable resistor) the user will be able to plot characteristic fuel cell polarisation curves (I.VS.V). It is possible to study the influence of many parameters including air temperature and humidity, electrode catalyst loading, thickness of polymer electrolyte membrane, etc. with this kit.

2. Contents of kit

1. Cell

The 25cm² air-breathing cells can be taken apart and reassembled. Holes have been bored into the outside face of the kit to ensure that the cathode is in contact with the surrounding air. The cell has one hydrogen gas input and one exit.

2. Fuel Cell Components
• A 7-layer Membrane Electrode Assembly composed of polymer electrolyte membrane that has been coated on both sides with catalyst ink. Gas diffusion layers and gaskets have been pressed onto the membrane.
• A non-assembled 7-layer MEA, can also be supplied, consisting of:
• a polymer electrolyte membrane that has been coated on both sides with a Pt/C catalyst ink, 25cm² active area. (3-layer MEA).
• 2 gas diffusion layers made from a carbon fibre material (25cm²)
• 2 pre-cut silicon gasket

3. Hydrogen

The hydrogen supply for the kit can either come from an electrolyser or a pressurised hydrogen canister (aerosol 12 bars).

• The electrolyser kit is composed of a 3V DC power supply an water electrolysis cell.
• The hydrogen gas reservoir is provided with one adaptator for regulating the gas. The hydrogen reservoir can be bought on the Hycan website
