An alternative to thermal engines…..
Since the end of the sixties fuel cells have been presented as the ideal and ecological successor to thermal generators. As a result there have been high expectations for this technology in the automobile industry in the last few decades. However, little has been achieved due to the restricted production costs in the automobile industry.
A fuel cell in my computer ?
However if the price of the integration of fuel cells in electric vehicles is prohibitive for the moment, it is perfectly compatible with consumer products in the electric and electronics industries. Recent advances have been made which have allowed the development of a new, lighter and more efficient generation of fuel cells, that will bring the extra power and longer running times that are needed in these industries. Thus, the first fuel cells to appear on the market will probably be used to power portable electric / electronic appliances.
From dreams to reality !
Fuel cell prototypes, whose geometries can be adapted to all types of equipment, exist today and can equal the performances of the best batteries on the market in the power range from 2 to 150 Watts. One of the main advantages of the new generation of fuel cells is to be able to adapt the voltage of the fuel cell to the application, without any mechanical limitations as with the classical fuel cell stack.
